Installing Larch Cladding

The cladding is nailed or stapled to the battens, the spacing of which ought to be at maximum centres of 60 cm.

BATTENS: We offer rough sawn dried larch battens 16x50 mm or 27x50 mm. If you are seeking greater precision then we advise machine planed battens 22mm, 30mm or 50mm thick and 45 mm wide, in lengths of 2m or 2m50 according to our stocks. The use of battens provides space for air circulation, additional insulation & the passage or electrical conduits, water pipes & mechanical air ventilation.

TIPS: we recommend the use of 40 mm "brad" nails. It is also possible to use staples. Individual pieces are nailed into the groove thus rendering the nail invisible when the next piece is added.

MOUNTING CLIPS: as an alternative Ambiance Bois offers fastening clips which have several advantages: they are nailed on the battens rather than the panelling, which facilitates installation and prevents possible damage to the wood while hammering. Moreover if necessary the panelling can be recovered at a later date without damage. The brackets are sold in boxes of 250 & include nails (one box is sufficient for 10 m²). They can be used for Chamfer & Butt Jointed but are not suitable for our Elegi cladding.

Bathrooms & Kitchens

For installation in these environments the cladding must be varnished on both sides and each end to protect the wood from water splash and to facilitate maintenance. It is imperative to avoid permanent exposure to water and to ensure sufficient ventilation of the room.

OUTDOORS: the cladding may be used on areas with an overhanging roof or under a canopy/shelter.

EXCEPTIONAL CASES: in homes with large fluctuations of temperature and/or humidity during the year (second homes which may be unheated for several months), it is strongly recommended to leave an expansion space of about 10mm before the first & after the final piece of cladding. In all such cases it is imperative to consider the regulation of humidity & temperature before installation.

If variations in humidity are sufficient the spacing between individual pieces is more apparent in our butt jointed profile.

The cladding offers many possibilities for an original installation: horizontal, vertical or diagonal. It is further possible to mix different widths and styles. For a stronger finish you can also use our exterior 22mm machine planed larch click here.

Larch Skirting Boards

For a clean transition between walls & floor we propose our larch skirting - known as plinthes. These are available in lengths ranging from 1,20m to 2,50m width 95 mm & 13 mm thickness. Like our parquet & interior cladding, skirting boards are available in two qualities, Ambiance and Rustic. Our skirting has a 45 ° chamfer visible along its upper length with a corresponding chamfer along the bottom edge of each length to help with installation on uneven surfaces.

Finishing

Simply left in its natural state, or enhanced with an oil or varnish allows the natural character of the wood to shine through. Alternatively apply a distressed finish which lightly colours the cladding whilst preserving the grain.
